Mac trackpad gestures: built-in settings vs. TouchX

Use macOS settings for standard gestures. Try TouchX when you want to choose the action a gesture runs, or assign different actions to different trackpad regions.

Which option fits your workflow?

Switch desktops or zoom
Start in System Settings → Trackpad. macOS already provides gestures for these actions.
Copy on the right, paste on the left
Use TouchX to assign a two-finger tap to different actions by trackpad region.
Adjust brightness and volume by sliding along an edge
Use TouchX to assign vertical motion on each edge to a separate control.
Take a screenshot with three fingers
Use TouchX to map a three-finger pinch to a screenshot action.

Try this before changing more gestures

  1. In TouchX, set a two-finger tap on the right to Copy and a two-finger tap on the left to Paste.
  2. In a text editor, type a short sentence, select it, and tap on the right. Move the caret to a blank line and tap on the left. The original sentence should appear on the new line.
  3. If a context menu opens instead, check the macOS secondary-click gesture. Try a different finger count or region for one rule, then repeat the test.
